Sail tested: 4.7 Ezzy Wave Panther.

The first impression:

The Panther makes at first sight has a very good and well built impression. The largest difference to the predecessor Wave SE is the shorter boom. In the Leech a new material is used, that allegedly is more UV resistant and in addition lighter than monofilm. The mast sleeve is likewise very high-quality. Apart from the good building quality a surprise waits at the foot of the sail. One can use a trim block or alternatively a d-ring in case you prefer using a  trim hook with your extension. The Panther has no longer as much profile as its predecessor, but nevertheless a strongly preformed belly within the foot area. 

Rigging and tuning:

The sail is to be trimmed mainly over the outhaul. At the downhaul one has actually only a very little range to play with. The downhaul should not vary more than one cm. That has the advantage that you can get along with mainly tuning the sail on the outhaul. The 4.7 needs a four-meter mast. Rigging is easy.

Handling characteristics:

The Panther lies well in the hand, feels directly and the new material in the Leech lets the sail feel light and respond quickly. The drive, which the sail supplies, is very pleasant and although it has less belly as its predecessor, it is quite early to plan. If the wind picks up it mostly is enough to increase the outhaul and the sail again is balanced and neutral in the hand. There is a wide tuning range without touching the downhaul which is very pleasant. The pressure point is very stable and gives the rider the pleasure of riding very relaxed also in rough conditions. If one adjusted the harness lines correctly, one can remain on the water for a long time on the water without getting tired. The sail has enough power to plan through lulls and accelerates quickly, as soon as the wind is back. Also because of the large wind range the sail is not only suitable for waves only.  The large wind range of the sail, however, compensates this small deficiency by far.

Result:

The Panther has everything, for which Ezzy stands: It offers simple handling in combination with a lot of performance and a really huge wind range. According to our opinion, the Panther is the best Ezzy ever.

Spectra® X-Film:

Our Spectra® X-Film, with its super-tough Spectra® Yarns laminated between two layers of film, has 1,000 times stronger tear strength and better UV resistance than monofilm.

David Ezzy’s own triaxial rip-stop film that now sets the standard by which all other sail materials are measured. The new x-ply laminate material utilizes a Spectra® yarn. Braided with a polyester filament, in a wide triaxial grid, the results are astonishing.

Due to the wider grid pattern, this material weighs less than our previous x-ply film, thus reducing the sails’ overall weight. A benefit to surf sailors and swell riders, the Spectra laminate also offers improved visibility and five times the rip-stopping power of traditional x-ply laminate films. This has resulted in a revolutionary material which boasts an unprecedented strength-to-weight ratio.

The Spectra® laminate film is found in the  Ezzy Wave Special Edition, the Ezzy Infinity, and the Ezzy Eagle Kids Sail.

Vinyl windows

Vinyl is a super durable material that is very hard to puncture or rip. Other sail companies a monofilm window that will fog up due to exposure to the

sun. Monofilm is much easier to puncture or tear with your harness hook, knees or head.  The Ezzy Special Edition Wave and Eagle series sails feature vinyl windows.

Endobatten Shaping

The shaping in our sails is done in every panel along with the luff curve. There is shape in every panel and every panel overlaps to create a batten pocket. Doing this we can make the draft in the sail move forward. Other company’s sails, the draft moves back when you sheet in. This creates a constant pull on your backhand

Unparalleled R&D

10 months out of the year we are designing, making and testing prototypes for the next year’s sails. We make almost a sail a day. Other companies make 1 sail a week or every two weeks. We test our sails in a variety of conditions on Maui. We are constantly trying new ideas and materials to make our sails better than the rest.

Finest Manufacturing Standards Available

Every Ezzy Sail is assembled by David Ezzy’s own factory.  This means the quality control is set up to his exacting standards.  Every sail is rigged before it leaves the factory to make sure every seam is flawless.

When the sails are being made in the factory, every one is rigged and checked for quality.

Technora:

 High tensile strength

• Strong and light: weight for weight, Technora is 8 times stronger than steel and 3 times stronger than fiberglass, polyester or nylon yarns.

Fatigue resistance

• Shows little loss of strength even during repeated abrasion, flexing and stretching.

Dimensional stability

• Stiff and highly oriented molecular structure leads to a high modulus of elasticity, low creep and low stress relaxation. Low thermal shrinkage, i.e., excellent dimensional stability.

Heat resistance

• Thermal decomposition threshold of 500ºC, so Technora can be used at 200ºC for long periods. At 250ºC, it maintains more than half of its room-temperature tensile strength.

Chemical resistance

• Highly resistant to acids, alkalies and organic solvents; not vulnerable to damage caused by steam or sea water.

Technora Sail Cloth

 The Tri-Lite:

• The Tri-Lite consists of a closely space woven polyester scrim and X ply that is laminated with thin film on both sides.
• The overall weight is about 40% less than monofilm.
• The tear strength is much better than standard X ply because of the combination of scrim, X ply and the thinner film.
• The Tri-Lite also has 2 to 3 times better UV strength because the thinner film does not get as brittle as thicker films do when baked in the sun.

- The build quality – I have a Freeride 6.5 2007

- It’s the sail that I use more offen and it still in good shape.

- The fact that is no monofilm in the sail.

- The huge wind range and the easy way to tune it from the outhaul even in deep water.

- The fact that the sail is not very mast specific so I can use the mast that already have.

Infinity (6.5 2009 and 7.5 2010):

• Having cams that are fitting for a variety of masts is really neat as it ensures good rotation regardless of mast diameter
• The fact that the sail is not very mast specific is a great boon. I am a heavy guy and I have experimented using the 7.5 on a 490 SDM mast after having read something about Dave White in the UK and his quirky stiff mast rigging… I went back to the 460 SDM Ezzy mast though..

Panther: (5.2, 6.0 2009′s, my new 6.9 is still on order)

• Positive feeling in the bottom end
• Build quality
• Easy to rig, easy to tune
• Massive wind range

In general about Ezzy sails:

• No need for gazillions of pounds of downhaul (I have back issues)
• Well built and really nice looking sails
• Honest price levels in comparison to other brands
• The Ezzy company seems to put people first with regards to manufacturing and that counts for something imho.
• So far any question I have had has been answered by the folks at ezzy, yourself and David included.

Here is the text in English:

Sail tested: 4.7 Ezzy Wave Panther.

The first impression:

The Panther makes at first sight has a very good and well built impression. The largest difference to the predecessor Wave SE is the shorter boom. In the Leech a new material is used, that allegedly is more UV resistant and in addition lighter than monofilm. The mast sleeve is likewise very high-quality. Apart from the good building quality a surprise waits at the foot of the sail. One can use a trim block or alternatively a d-ring in case you prefer using a  trim hook with your extension. The Panther has no longer as much profile as its predecessor, but nevertheless a strongly preformed belly within the foot area. 

Rigging and tuning:

The sail is to be trimmed mainly over the outhaul. At the downhaul one has actually only a very little range to play with. The downhaul should not vary more than one cm. That has the advantage that you can get along with mainly tuning the sail on the outhaul. The 4.7 needs a four-meter mast. Rigging is easy.

Handling characteristics:

The Panther lies well in the hand, feels directly and the new material in the Leech lets the sail feel light and respond quickly. The drive, which the sail supplies, is very pleasant and although it has less belly as its predecessor, it is quite early to plan. If the wind picks up it mostly is enough to increase the outhaul and the sail again is balanced and neutral in the hand. There is a wide tuning range without touching the downhaul which is very pleasant. The pressure point is very stable and gives the rider the pleasure of riding very relaxed also in rough conditions. If one adjusted the harness lines correctly, one can remain on the water for a long time on the water without getting tired. The sail has enough power to plan through lulls and accelerates quickly, as soon as the wind is back. Also because of the large wind range the sail is not only suitable for waves only.  The large wind range of the sail, however, compensates this small deficiency by far.

Result:

The Panther has everything, for which Ezzy stands: It offers simple handling in combination with a lot of performance and a really huge wind range. According to our opinion, the Panther is the best Ezzy ever.
